Tips for successful PR for NFT startups

Stand out from the crowd with these PR tips for launching your NFT startup

NFT startups are popping up everywhere, from unique marketplaces to wallets and minting opportunities. As the valuation of NFTs is heavily affected by the community that rallies behind them, making sure your NFT startup stays at the forefront of the news will enable future growth and set you on a path to success. Therefore, it is important to maximize every opportunity to secure coverage for your launch and stand out from the crowd.

Create a targeted outreach plan for maximum impact

The first thing to do is create a PR strategy ahead of your launch. Rushing your publicity efforts won’t garner the desired results without a game plan. Get creative and think about what story would be most interesting to the industry as a whole. Creating a PR strategy with a detailed timeline will ensure you are never forgotten about, even in the months you have no “obvious” news.

You may have many new ideas you want to share as you launch your NFT startup. Before you put out a blog post or tweet about these news items, ask yourself if you can leverage them into a bigger story and secure coverage on top-tier outlets.

It is vital that you first map out your planned announcements. When will your NFT startup launch? Are there features on the platform that will be implemented in the months that follow the launch? Pitching news takes time, so mapping out a four-month plan will allow you to get the most out of your press and pitching process. By mapping this out in advance, you can ensure you provide optimal time for your outreaches to achieve the best results.

When planning your upcoming outreaches, be sure to include announcements about any upcoming funding, partnerships, or exclusive NFT drops. You can also think about what value your NFT startup can bring to the larger community. For example, can you gather statistics or data that the industry will find interesting or informative? Maybe you’ve just wrapped up your end-of-year reporting and found that audio NFTs sell three times faster than visual NFTs. Or perhaps your data shows that a certain region is buying the most, whereas another region is minting and selling the most. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when looking for a story to tell.

Innovate beyond the standard press release strategy

A press release is great for making key announcements. Still, when it comes to sharing your company’s key messages, there are methods other than a press release, especially when there isn’t necessarily news to announce. As NFTs have increased in popularity, so have the different platforms on which people are discussing the ever-changing digital landscape.

Although NFTs have been around for almost nine years now, the concept has only recently truly taken off. We were in the know about digital art possession even before NFTs took off. In 2018, we shared Masterworks' story about its new venture offering fractional ownership in multi-million dollar artworks for as little as $20. We secured some major hits on CNN, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, the Observer, VentureBeat, and more.

As brands and artists expand even further into the NFT space, mass adoption will quickly follow. What can you do to boost visibility and credibility? Thought leadership can help your startup build both by presenting members of your leadership team as experts within their fields. A thought-provoking or informative guest post, bylined by your founder or someone in your C-suite, will get your startup noticed and garner the respect that will result in future growth. But don’t just feed the hype! Valuable thought leadership pieces take both time and an understanding of what media outlets are looking for when it comes to guest posts. Thought-out evaluation within the pieces will take you further than just talking about how great your industry is.

Another avenue to consider in slow news months is being interviewed on podcasts. We all listen to them, and there's a podcast on everything. As NFTs skyrocketed in popularity, so did podcasts about them. There are many podcasts now available to listen to about NFTs, and they also cover a variety of different verticals and audiences – from NFTs for beginners to deep tech or artist-specific ones.

Finally, don’t forget about events! NFT-related conferences and meetups are popping up all across the globe, and with that comes speaking opportunities. From panels to presentations and even moderator opportunities, getting on stage is a great way to share your story directly with the NFT community.

NFTs are a hot topic in the media, but with that comes lots of competition. Staying in the news takes time and planning, so it's important to have a team within your startup – or an external agency – dedicated to executing your PR strategy. Creating this plan ahead of the launch will set you up for success and ensure no month is a slow news month.
