What I actually want in a pitch
A tech reporter walks through the three things that make them open an email — and the one that makes them delete it.

1) What’s the best way to pitch you?
A very short email. Bullet points are good.
2) What’s the best time to pitch you?
Any time of day is fine.
3) Other than your own, which is your favorite publication to read?
The Information
4) Who’s your favorite journalist?
Kashmir Hill, Sam Biddle, Dan Frommer, Matt Honan, Amir Efrati
5) What kind of stories interest you?
Wearable tech, mobile messaging, health tracking, a little bit of cyber security
6) What tips would you give someone pitching you?
Keep it short. Read some of my previous work to get a sense of what I’m looking for.
7) What will you never write about?
Enterprise device management.
8) Star Wars or Star Trek?
I’m a trekkie all the way.

One good follow-up can revive a dead pitch. Three bad ones will get you blocked.
